Job Title: Business Advisor, Tyler Small Business Development Center (SBDC)

Salary Range: $50,000-60,000 Annually (Grant Funded)

Job Description:  To advise clients in the areas of business planning, accounting, market research, sources of capital, and human resource issues

This position is 100% responsible to a grant.  Therefore, the continuation of the position is subject to continued external funding.                

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS and DUTIES

Primary Responsibilities

1. Consulting Services

·         Advise small business owners to assist with raising capital and implementing strategies for growth

·         Advise individuals wanting to start or expand companies; determine needs of clients

·         Provide current and relevant information on starting a business

·         Assist clients in preparing  a business plan, a strategic plan and/or cash flow projections

·         Refer clients to appropriate resources. 

·         Meet all metric requirements as determined by the SBDC Director and North Texas SBDC Network.

2. Research

·         Conduct research for client projects through the SBDC, TJC Library, federal, state, and local sources to provide information on industries, competitors and marketing

·         Make recommendations to clients based on analysis and research

·         Research and prepare reports for clients as determined by needs analysis

3. Training

·         Coordinate and present training events, seminars and workshops for clients at locations within the Tyler SBDC Territory

·         Coordinate and present specialty workshops as requested

4. Administrative

·         Enter all client information in SBDC database as per the grant requirements

·         Prepare reports for the Director as requested

·         Attend client companies’ “Grand Openings” as available

·         Prepare and submit reports to the Director on a timely basis

·         Attend professional development training events as appropriate

·         Stay current on changes in SBA, NTSBDC, TJC, federal, state and local business policies and procedures.

5. Marketing and Communication

·         Prepare workshop and workshop pieces,  ensuring all SBDC guidelines and logo requirements are met

·         Discuss with the Director appropriate marketing venues

·         Conduct outreach events and/or speak at local organizations as requested

 

COMPETENCIES

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

·         Must have strong financial analysis experience and ability to quickly analyze large amounts of financial and statistical data

·         Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

·         Solid writing ability and organizational skills

·         Solid analytical, decision-making and problem-solving skills

·         Solid computer skills with experience using Microsoft Word and Excel

·         Ability to work on a variety of tasks on a daily basis

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Education

Bachelor’s degree or combination of education and experience.      

Preferred Education

Bachelor’s degree in Business Finance or Accounting

Required Experience

·         Three to five years related work experience

·         Experience is preferred in small business advising

·         Experience working with and knowledge of the North Texas SBDC Network and/or the US Small Business Administration is beneficial

·         Must not have conflict of interest such as currently owning and operating a business advising company. 

 

EXPECTATIONS

Travel

Must have and maintain a current valid Texas driver’s license and an acceptable driving record

May require some travel, including overnight(s) for conferences

 

General Expectations

·         Perform other duties as assigned.

·         Will have contact – in person, by email, or by phone – with staff, students, and the general public.

·         Must exhibit a sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and students and to staff and students with disabilities.
